TLC Cheshire provides cuddly bears to A&E departments for medical staff to give to young children

TLC Cheshire

To date, Cheshire Freemasons have donated more than 161,000 Teddies to A&E Departments in all the major hospitals throughout Cheshire. TLC also provides Teddies to Clatterbridge Children’s Cancer Care Unit where they are given to children who are being treated for cancer.

The TLC program is a national initiative run by Freemasons across England and Wales who volunteer their time, distributing unique cuddly bears to A&E departments for medical staff to calm children down, reward them for being brave or to demonstrate procedures. Often the bears distract children so nurses and doctors can get their jobs done quickly and efficiently. The TLC teddy has become an invaluable tool for medical professionals and a real comfort for children.

Michael Ross, TLC Cheshire,  said “Having the bears is so helpful, the children love them, and they help massively in terms of building rapport with those who are afraid of the situation. During the last 12 months, Cheshire Freemasons have raised £28,645.31 and have purchased nearly 6,768 bears which have been donated to the Macclesfield Hospital, Arrowe Park Hospital, Countess of Cheshire Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital, Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Victoria Infirmary, Northwich, Warrington General Hospital and Halton General Hospital.”

Running a marathon in bear-y good time

Adam Jones is new to Freemasonry and is due to be raised next month, but he is certainly already making an impact for his Lodge.

When Adam’s nephew had recently visited hospital with a broken collar bone, he was given a bear during his visit to help cope with the stressful time. TLC Cheshire’s representative, Michael, instantly recognised it as a TLC bear and explained to Adam how Freemasons help distribute the teddies to children’s A&E hospitals. Adam immediately knew he had to get involved with fundraising for TLC after seeing the joy our teddy brought to his nephew.

That’s just what he did! On 21 April, Adam ran the London Marathon to raise money in support of Teddies for Loving Care. But he decided to go one step further and run the race in a TLC bear suit!

Adam has completed numerous marathons to raise money for charity, and has even run 100 miles in one day. We’d like to thank Adam for his incredible fundraising effort. If you’d like to support Adam, then make sure to donate to his fundraiser: https://donate.givetap.co.uk/f/masonic-charitable-foundation/e0198-tlc-cheshire/tlc-london-bear-run
