Our Friends in the North
Our Friends in the North
The Cheshire Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge No. 3449 hosted around 200 Freemasons at Hulme Hall for the second reading of this year’s Prestonian Lecture titled “Our Friends in the North”.
Cheshire’s very own Deputy Provincial Grand Master, His Honour Judge Simon Medland KC, took to the stage and delivered a fascinating lecture on the history of Freemasonry in Cheshire and its effect on Freemasonry in England, all with his usual grace and comedic tact.
He did point out that the lecture’s title is relative, as for the large contingent of visitors from the Ayrshire Freemasons in Scotland, we were indeed their friends in the South!
Beyond the witty observations, the lecture delved deep into the foundational strengths of the Craft, particularly those built outside of London. Simon posed the powerful question: “…what would Grand Lodge be without the Provinces?” He of course provided a compelling answer, one that we believe you should go and find out in a future showing!”

- Membership is open to people from all backgrounds and the organisation’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be – it’s about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society.
About Freemasonry in England and Wales:
- Freemasonry offers the opportunity to engage with like-minded people from different backgrounds who you wouldn’t usually meet.
